Artist Statement

Visions of Paradise Lost I am fascinated by Paradise Lost, John Milton’s epic poem about the fall of love. It resonates with my own personal struggles and questions about human nature, free will, and morality from another perspective. In this new series of paintings, I explore these themes through visions inspired by the poetic descriptions in the poem, from different perspectives such as from a broken angel, Adam, and Eve. I paint with oils on canvas, but I also add layers of texture and contrast with glazing techniques. I use cool and warm colors to evoke the mood of heaven and inferno, divine and evil as well as temptation and love. For example, I paint fallen angels with fiery reds and oranges, while I paint Adam and Eve with icy blues and purples to show their attraction and their downfall. I also use classical music as a source of inspiration, such as Handel’s Messiah or Holst’s the Planets which also reflect the narrative and the emotion of the poem. I create rhythm and movement in my compositions with my own brush strokes, while also suggesting order and structure. My goal is to invite viewers to experience a dialogue between my personal vision and a story about love and betrayal, from different perspectives. I hope you will enjoy these paintings of my visions from Paradise Lost and discover the connections between this painting form of expression and classical interpretations of human nature, love, and betrayal between two soulmates.
